My research is centered on shaneidentifying the circuit mechanisms that synchronize olfactory bulb output. In particular, I use pharmacological approaches and light stimulation of channelrhodopsin-2 expressed in olfactory sensory neuron axon terminals to induce gamma band oscillations in slices of mouse olfactory bulbs. Gamma band oscillations in the local field potential are a strong indicator of synchronization in the underlying network circuitry. Other work has shown that these oscillations are coherent across the intact olfactory bulb during odorant investigation. I am currently using a microelectrode array to study how olfactory bulb circuitry coordinates oscillating regions across space to produce broadly coherent oscillations.
